Ajax are on the verge of securing a spot in the knockout stage of the Europa League. All it takes is a win against Celta Vigo, and Standard Liege failing to win their clash against Panathinaikos tomorrow night.
Ajax and Celta, the two heavyweights of group G, played out an entertaining yet scrappy reverse fixture a fortnight ago in Spain, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Both teams could have easily nicked the maximum points towards their end however, with the pitch wide open at times. Should they go about their business in a similar fashion tomorrow, we could be in for another goal-filled game.
The Amsterdammers will have to do without Nick Viergever due to a minor muscle injury, whilst Daley Sinkgraven and Nemanja Gudelj return from injury and are part of the squad. Here’s the entire list of players selected for the Europa League showdown:
Celta Vigo possess a strong attacking threat, usually led by former Feyenoord striker John Guidetti, supported by their wingers including highly rated Pione Sisto. The back-four of the Amsterdam side is bound to be tested tomorrow, and likely a little bit more than in last Saturday’s Eredivisie match against Excelsior.
Either way, Peter Bosz is confident of getting a good result tomorrow: “It’s hard to prepare for them, as they keep changing their line-up around. But they too have their weaknesses.”
It’s tough to predict the outcome as both sides have been unstable throughout the season. Ajax will be hoping their A-team turn up and are prepared to dig deep for a result that will hopefully secure their knockout stage spot.
